The Fake Wedding That Changed My Life

The picture above is of the entrance to The St. Paul Seminary (St. Paul, MN).

I met my wife there, 21 years ago, at a fake wedding. 😊

In the fall of my junior year at The University of St. Thomas, I was invited by a good friend of mine to be his “best man” at a practice wedding that was being “celebrated” by then seminarian (now well-known priest!), Fr. Mike Schmitz.

Being a close friend of the Schmitz family, a beautiful freshman lady named Kate showed up to attend this “wedding”.

While this first meeting of ours was brief, it was the beginning of a friendship that would eventually lead us to a REAL wedding (ours!) celebrated by a now REAL priest (officially ordained) Fr. Mike Schmitz! 🎊

15 years, 4 kids, and a BILLION joys and blessings later and I find myself grinning like a little kid every time I come back to visit the St. Paul Seminary.

Who would have ever thought this chance encounter would’ve been so monumental???

God, thanks for writing the first words of this fun and surprising love story those many years ago – and for the pages and chapters still ahead! ☺️
